I’ve been called “Buddy” more in the last few weeks since I started my internship than at least the last few years combined. Not the I mind or anything, but I feel like I’m 8 again. Guess that’s the price of being one of the youngest interns here. It’s kind funny though, I guess your never too old for buddy.

I started teaching math today to 5th and 6th graders who told me they already understand all the material I was given to teach them until Week 6. (So 5 weeks from now.)

I want to bring my middle school textbooks to teach them something actually useful but my boss wants me to stay with his material and not tell them I’m 20 because these parents expect their children to be taught by senile old Asian men instead of college students.

What part of the country are you at? “Buddy” was used a lot when I was in California back in the late 80’s. In my recent travels, I’ve noticed “Boss” used a lot in SoCal, “Hoss” used a lot in Texas, “Sir” used a lot in SoFlo, “Dude” used a lot in Central US, and “Go f*$k yourself” in New York.

One of the best people I ever worked with used to call me “kiddo” all the time and I’m a couple of years older than him. He still calls me kiddo even though we don’t work together anymore.

As long as someone isn’t trying to patronize or demean you, terms of endearment can be good things. My friend’s habit has now rubbed off on me: I call other people kiddo all the time now, too. Heh.

I’ve never actually heard “hoss” used in Texas and I live here. “Boss,” “chief,” and “sir” are all very common here, though.

And funny you say that because we had a 23 year old teacher ran out of his job (and he was awesome) because parents flipped when they learned he was young. Little did they know we learned best from him because he understood us and technology and what’s going on in our lives.
